'A-team' design for a B-ball team, "Thinking About the Box", the Taste Gap, and A24 films.
Frequent Visitors is a weekly newsletter created to share the things we (over at Frequent Practice) have enjoyed visiting each week. Sometimes related to design, reads, and creativity. Sometimes related to anything else.
We always love supporting Margot Lévêque’s work, and we’re especially fond of her recent custom lettering project for the Utah Jazz basketball team (a gym has never looked better).
After a brief hiatus, we are back to our regular scheduled programming of sharing the brilliant work by New Studio. Derek Brahney creates conceptually-minded images, objects, and experiences for clients including: the New York Times, The Atlantic, Harvard Business Review, and the WSJ. We highly recommend spending some time perusing through their cleverly crafted images.
Revisiting this Ira Glass quote on the taste gap that continues to stick with us:
Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, and I really wish somebody had told this to me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it's like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you're making stuff, what you're making isn't so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you're making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit.
Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn't as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that. And if you are just starting out or if you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you're going to finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you're going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you're making will be as good as your ambitions. I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It takes awhile. It’s gonna take you a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just have to fight your way through that.
(You can also watch this sweet short (2 min) film inspired by the interview.)
We had the pleasure of watching C’mon C’mon—the recently released Mike Mills film with a delicate, considered, and heartfelt story about the connections between adults and children, and the past and future. Beautifully shot, written, and acted with sublime performances by Joaquin Phoenix, Woody Norman, and Gaby Hoffmann.
Speaking of A24 (C’mon C’mon), we loved flipping through their collection of film promotion memorabilia of over 160 Hollywood marketing artifacts, as documented in this perfectly pink book designed by our heroes at Order Design.
In lieu of attending the event, we’ve been visiting the projects and articles on CHART, the leading Nordic art event and new editorial platform. They showcase an inspiring mix of dedicated individuals and professionals impacting the future of the arts community in the Nordics and beyond.
That is all for this week! Thank you for reading and we hope you enjoyed your visit :) We love having visitors as much as we love being them, so it would mean the world if you shared this newsletter with someone you think might enjoy it! As always, we’d love to hear your thoughts + learn about some of your favourite finds by reading your replies to this email.
